Is a roof tent legal? Rules for car and accommodation
A rooftop tent can transform an ordinary car into a flexible base for weekend trips, road trips, and spontaneous nights close to nature. But the question "is a rooftop tent legal?" naturally arises before you strap the tent onto the roof and drive off. The short answer is yes – rooftop tents are legal in Denmark, as long as the car, the mounting, and your way of spending the night follow the applicable regulations.

You also need to be aware of the car's permissible roof load, secure mounting, driving height, and the local rules where you park for the night. Is a rooftop tent legal on the car?
There is no general prohibition against driving with a rooftop tent in Denmark. A rooftop tent is considered equipment transported on the car, and it must therefore be securely mounted and must not make the car unsafe for traffic. In practice, this means that roof racks, roof rails, and brackets must be suitable for both your car and the weight of the tent.
The most important number to know is the car's dynamic roof load. This is the maximum weight the roof is approved for while driving. This information is typically found in the car's owner's manual or can be obtained from the manufacturer. Here, you must include the entire setup: rooftop tent, roof racks, any crossbars, and other equipment on the roof.

The dynamic roof load applies when the car is moving. Here, speed, wind, braking, and turns affect the load. The static load applies when the car is stationary, and the weight of people in the tent is distributed through the roof racks and the car's roof structure.
You must still choose a rooftop tent and a roof rack that are made for your car type. The car's dynamic roof load is the limit you must never exceed on the road. If you are in doubt about fit, weight, or rack type, it is better to get advice before buying than to rely on a solution that is only almost suitable.
Secure mounting is part of the rules
A rooftop tent must be securely fastened – even after many kilometers on the motorway, bumpy gravel roads, and a wet weekend trip. Always follow the manufacturer's mounting instructions, use the brackets supplied or approved for the system, and check the tension after the first few drives.
Pay particular attention to whether your rooftop tent requires specific distances between the crossbars. The bars must also not be too weak for the total weight. A roof rail is not in itself a guarantee that the car can carry a large rooftop tent. On some cars, special model-specific roof racks must be used, while others require a more solid roof rack.
Also, check the tent's closure before departure. Straps, cover, zippers, and buckles must be completely closed so that nothing can lift in the wind. A loose strap is not just annoying to hear – it can develop into a real safety hazard.
Height, speed, and the car's driving characteristics
With a rooftop tent, the car becomes both taller and less aerodynamic. This is legal, but it changes the way you should drive. Many rooftop tents add 30-45 cm or more to the car's normal height, depending on the model and rack system. Therefore, remember the height when entering car parks, ferries, carports, car washes, bridges with low clearance, and barriers on forest roads.
Wind sensitivity also increases. Side winds, overtaking trucks, and quick lane changes are more noticeable with weight high on the car. Therefore, drive more calmly, keep an extra distance, and adjust your speed to the weather and road conditions. The manufacturer of the rooftop tent may also have a recommended maximum speed that you must adhere to.
Fuel consumption or electricity consumption on electric cars will typically increase because the tent creates more wind resistance. This is not a legal problem, but it is worth planning for, especially on long holiday trips. In return, you get a fixed sleeping place with you, without having to pull a caravan or invest in a full campervan.
Can you sleep in the rooftop tent anywhere?
Here, the rules are more dependent on the location. As a rule, it is not the rooftop tent that is illegal – it may be the overnight stay or the camping behavior that is not allowed in that specific place.
At a campsite, a rooftop tent is usually a simple and safe solution. You have access to facilities, and the place is intended for overnight stays. On private land, you can stay overnight if you have the owner's permission. This also applies to driveways, private fields, and courtyards.
In public car parks, signage and local regulations may set limits on parking and overnight stays. In some places, short-term parking is allowed, but camping is not. In other places, there may be a direct ban on overnight parking. Always read the signs at the entrance and respect time limits.
In nature, you need to be extra careful. The rules on wild camping do not automatically apply to a rooftop tent on a car, and you must not drive or park outside areas where driving and parking are permitted. National parks, beaches, harbor areas, protected natural areas, and municipal areas may have special rules. When in doubt, choose an official overnight spot or ask the landowner, municipality, or site manager.

In some places, a simple night's rest in the car is accepted, while others make a sharp distinction between parking and camping.
It can also depend on the region, coastal area, or municipality. In popular tourist areas, rules are often enforced more consistently, especially where many campers and cars strain nature. Therefore, plan your overnight stays in advance if you are traveling in high season or want to visit protected natural areas.
